SPRING LEAGUE - F.A.Q.'s
• WHO COACHES IN SPRING LEAGUE?
There are no "official" coaches in SPRING LEAGUE , unless we have a volunteer step forward and ask to be the coach. In the past, a parent volunteer has always stepped forward to roster the players through and ensure that everyone has played equally. It does not have to be the same parent every game ...anyone can do this. (ie. There are roster sheets at the scorers table that tell you exactly "who" plays "when"...so there is NO pressure on the coach" to have to make a decision ...He just calls out the player's name and that player goes on the next shift!)
If the "coach of the day" happens to know anything about basketball, he/she sometimes calls timeouts to give the players some "hints"...but nothing formal. The idea of Spring League is to make this as "stress free" as possible. This is purely "recreational" basketball ...one step up from "street" ball (because there are refs who will be calling fouls and violations) but it's whole purpose is to have the opportunity to PLAY more basketball ...just for the FUN of it and NOT to be instructed in the finer points ...this is NOT a basketball skills camp...just a series of fun rec games!
- WEEKDAY GAMES ...ANY WAY TO DETERMINE ON WHICH DAY THEY WILL PLAY?
We cannot guarantee that all weekday games will be played on just one day (ie. only Mondays or only Tuesdays) but the majority of games, within one division, are played on one day or the other. To be entirely safe though ...players must be prepared to play on both days thro the week or plan to miss a game or two (last season this only involved one team switching nights once in the schedule!)
• HOW MANY PLAYERS ON A TEAM?
There are a maximum of 11 players per team and a minimum of 7.
• CAN FRIENDS REQUEST TO PLAY TOGETHER?
YES ...the whole philosophy is to have FUN playing basketball ...and if playing with friends makes it more fun ...then we say - Lets do it! On average we have requests for 3-4 players to play together and this we can easily accommodate. If any team balancing is required we just move the "blocks" of players and NOT just the 1 strong player or the 1 weak one. Requests for more than 6 players on one team MAY result in some team balancing issues and we ask for your understanding should we have to split large groups of players into 2 teams.
• HOW DO THEY BALANCE SPRING LEAGUE TEAMS?
The first 2 games of the season are "exhibition" so that we can gauge the relative strengths or weaknesses of the teams ...If things are hugely out of whack, then we try and make adjustments at this point. In the beginning, players only receive a 2 game schedule. After the 2nd game (and any adjustments to the teams have been made) they receive the schedule for the balance of the season. Since there are no standings recorded, and no championship at the end ...just 12 games of officiated basketball ...there is not usually a major balance problem.
• ARE JERSEY'S PROVIDED?
Yes ...jerseys are provided. We borrow these from the GCBA for this purpose alone, and return them at the end of SL. A $25 (refundable) shirt deposit is required at registration and is returned when the shirt is. Shirts (and preliminary schedules) are picked up on the Wednesday before the first SL game. This year the Shirt Pickup will be on WEDNESDAY MARCH 24 from 7:30-9:00 pm at SIR WILFRID LAURIER SS cafeteria (MAP)
- WHERE WILL THE GAMES BE PLAYED?
Most games, this session will be played in our main Spring League gym at LA CITE COLLEGIALE. (see MAP) La Cite is the main gym, as it functions best for these purposes (a large number of games and an on-site convenor). Alternate gyms this year gyms in MAY TBD. Stay tuned!
